Dell Inspiron 1520 comes in ten exciting colours to choose from. To describe 1520 in simple words, we can say that this laptop will keep you connected, entertained and be productive-¬but not on the go. This “not on the go” mention is due to the weight of the laptop. The 1520 is one of those heavily built boys. Featuring a more attractive design than the previous Inspiron models, the Inspiron 1520 Laptop features nice rounded edges and an all silver keyboard.

Based on the Santa Rosa platform Dell Inspiron 1520 promises to deliver good performance at a reasonable price. You can choose from a wide range of Intel C2D processors. The look of the laptop is not as great as some of HP ones but the build of the laptop is very solid and compact. The lid is held firmly in place and easy to open and close. The keyboard is placed at a fair distance from the LCD. The touchpad is not big but has all the options like vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling and the standard left and right click buttons. Both are well placed are comfortable to use for a prolonged period.

The Inspiron 1520 allows for customization of color for the lid. This is a nice option, although I sometimes find that too much choice leads to indecision in the configuration process and you always second guess if another color might have been better after you finally decide on one.

The keys are spaced very well and long hours of typing won’t end for fingers in carpel tunnel syndrome. Inspiron 1520 Laptop like his Dell Inspiron buddies features the proprietary Dell Media Direct; so you can enjoy all multimedia capabilities without even booting into Windows up the laptop. The stereo speakers deliver just about the right sound required for a laptop. An integrated camera lets you enjoy your video conferencing without the need to invest in a separate web cam.               

The battery life with the standard 6-cell battery is around 3 hours with casual use, optimal brightness and 8600GT being the graphics card. If that is not enough you can opt for 9-cell battery but be prepared to have a hump on the back of your laptop. The laptop runs super quiet under normal load. Heat dissipation is less and will at most make your lap warm.

The laptop is running NFS: MW on full settings at 1280×800 resolutions easily (few hiccups due to less ram). I am also playing the game ‘Infernal’ on max settings. Of course it is not so flexible, but there are some wide varieties of component selections available with varied price points and features. I choose some high end components and some not so high end ones. I have always found it best to choose those components which fall on the knee-point in the prive vs performance curve. There is no point paying a fortune for a 2.2 GHz processor knowing very well that, that extra 200 MHz is not going to make a drastic performance difference.
