Dell XPS M1710 Review
Dell has introduced its ‘XPS M1710‘ consumer notebook computer, featuring Blu-ray Disc technology, and offering users more storage space and an array of DVD features. The company says that this enhancement furthers Dell’s strategy to offer customers PCs that can function as a single platform for a compelling digital entertainment throughout the home.
There’s no dearth of ports, jacks, or slots here: the Dell XPS M1710 features headphone and microphone jacks, VGA and DVI outputs, S-Video-out, four-pin FireWire, and a whopping six USB 2.0 ports.
Networking connections include a 56Kbps modem, 10/100/100 Gigabit Ethernet, optional Bluetooth, and integrated 802.11a/b/g wireless. Also onboard are an ExpressCard slot and a 5-in-1 media card reader; PC Card users, take note that the XPS M1710 does not support PCMCIA cards. (For the sake of comparison, the Toshiba Satellite P105-S921 has all of this, plus it supports PC Cards and SmartMedia cards and has an S/PDIF output, though it has two fewer USB 2.0 ports.) Finally, our Dell XPS M1710 test unit included a multiformat, double-layer DVD drive. Dell bundles a standard software package, including Microsoft Windows XP Media Center.
This notebook is the first Blu-ray Disc system to meet logo requirements for Nvidia PureVideo technology, which delivers the ultimate HD experience on a PC. It also comes with Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 and Intel Core 2 Duo T7600G (2.33GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB) processors, and superior Nvidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX graphics processing unit with 512MB that delivers vivid realism in the latest games at extreme HD.
The port selection on the Dell XPS M1710 is about as good as you can ask for, 6 USB 2.0 ports is better than many desktop machines and you have all the video connectors you could want with the VGA out, DVI and S-Video out connector. The touchpad is very cool with the XPS lighting, but more importantly it’s actually a decent size and works well with scroll zones on the right side for vertical scroll and on the bottom for horizontal scroll. The battery is a 9-cell located at the front area of the notebook, which is a little different to the normally far back positioned location. The battery has a nice feature in which you can push in on it to light up 5 green LEDs to display how much charge is left, this works whether the notebook is on or off.
Armed with a gorgeous 17″ WUXGA LCD panel that runs a native resolution of 1920×1200, the Dell XPS M1710 is aimed directly at the elite multimedia and gaming demographic. Although relatively light for a desktop replacement notebook with a respectable 8lb weight, the overall size and bulk of the system certainly won’t be mistaken for an ultraportable anytime soon. Those who travel with a notebook often might want to reconsider their choices as frequent travel with the system will be anything but pleasant. However, for those who need one of the fastest mobile systems on the planet the XPS M1710 is an exceptional choice.
