Always looking for the right mix of power and value, we were big fans of Gateway’s 17-inch gaming laptop lineup, ranging from the $3,000 P-171XL FX to the $1,299 P-6831FX, a retail-only model that was the cheapest way to get Nvidia’s GeForce 8800 GPU. Gateway’s recent refreshes of these systems have been equally impressive, even if they just offer minor component tweaks.

Just go buy it. - As heavy computer users in my day job, and as a hardcore gamer at night this laptop gets my recommendation and grade of a “A-” from me. The 1.8ghz in this box more than enough. My day job requires lots of screen real estate and number crunching power. I also do lots of Visio layouts and lots of multi-tasking. The 8800M GTS graphis card is the cornerstone of what makes this laptop a true powerhouse. I am talking about heavy gaming in DX10 HellGate London, Crysis, Gears of War all with graphic settings on high! You get all the ports you could wish for. It is heavy 9lbs.
No Vista Ultimate! why home preminum? I believe the P8680FX hits the sweet spot between the 3K rigs and getting something for 1k that can’t run the games the way you want play them. This laptop is so good that I got a second one for my wife who is also a gamer and got rid of both of our desktop PC’s.
