Lenovo ThinkPad X300 sub-notebook reviews
The ThinkPad X300 breaks new ground by packing a broad display, full-size keyboard, and nearly every feature a mobile user needs into a sleek, lightweight case. There was a common view that the X300 showed up Apple’s MacBook Air as a piece of inconsequential fluff, and while the Reg readership is collectively correct on that point it is pretty much wrong on the others because the X300 is utterly gorgeous.
Plus, Lenovo has used that extra thickness to good advantage. While the MacBook Air’s extreme thinness makes it gorgeous, it left no room for an Ethernet jack, a removable battery, a built-in DVD drive or a cellphone modem. The X300 has all these things, either standard or as options, plus three USB ports, compared with just one for the Apple. The Lenovo even offers GPS location-finding, the ability to connect to new wireless USB devices and future support for a forthcoming wireless network standard called WiMax.
The processor, for instance, is an ultra-low-voltage unit that’s so new that originally even Intel couldn’t tell us exactly what it is: it showed up as an L7100 in Device Manager, but Intel has informed us the CPU is actually the SL7100.
The sharper resolution doesn’t cause tremendous problems, though we did find ourselves pumping up the font size on a newspaper’s Web site so we could read a lengthy article. We also zoomed in when working on documents and spreadsheets. The trade-off: more screen real estate for multitasking and, when it’s time for a break, beautiful video.

The good: Extremely thin and light; sleekest ThinkPad yet; built-in DVD burner, plus WWAN, GPS, and wireless USB.
The bad: Solid-state drive comes at a high premium; touch pad’s location makes it easy to accidentally graze while typing.
The bottom line: The ThinkPad X300 breaks new ground by packing a broad display, full-size keyboard, and nearly every feature a mobile user needs into a sleek, lightweight case.
