The Toshiba Satellite A205 is a budget laptop with an HD-DVD drive, two things not normally associated with each other. At less than $1,000, it’s hard to argue with the value you’re getting, especially on a non-Celeron system. If you’re looking for an affordable laptop with an HD-DVD drive, the Satellite A205 is a good deal, assuming the HD-DVD format doesn’t die a slow death in 2008. While ideally we’d like to see 1080p and an HDMI out port, this is still a solid entry in 15.4-inch mainstream notebook category with the bonus of having a high-definition optical drive. Release: January 2008. Price: $900.

Stylishly accented with an onyx blue metallic LCD cover, the Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617 notebook PC is a great blend of multitasking productivity, multimedia prowess, and efficiently powered portability. It features Intel’s 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. The large, bright 15.4-inch XGA-resolution LCD (1280 x 800) is perfect for viewing multiple application screens or watching widescreen movies on DVD. It’s also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba’s unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. The dual-layer/multi-format DVD drive also burns CDs, and can print labels directly onto discs with the integrated Labelflash functionality.

Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617 Reviews from zdnet

The good: The Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617 laptop has 802.11n support, Harman Kardon speakers, and a Labelflash optical drive; a long, single hinge gives the laptop a sturdy feel.
The bad: Fingerprint-prone lid; no Bluetooth.
The bottom line: Toshiba adds faster Draft N Wi-Fi to this attractive if otherwise fairly conventional laptop. Just be sure you’ve got an 802.11n router to go along with it.
